7th Underhanded C Contest Going on Now
The Underhanded C contest opened to challengers yesterday and continues though New Years day 2015. This year's challenge features oversharing sites and National Security Letters in its theme, but with a twist in that the surveillance function is to subtly leak information about the act of surveillance. Last year's challenge involved a social media theme as well, though with a different angle for mischief. Challenges from past years are featured on the site which feature solutions perfect for ramping up a person's paranoia about software quality.

Parimutuel wagering game War of Life operating as S.WOL published their closing statement today. War of Life offered wagering based on the outcome of cellular automaton simulations. A distinguishing feature of War of Life was that it offered a more nuanced system of bet weighting than simple time weighting could offer. Disney Patents "Piracy Free" Search Engine
Disney has been awarded a patent on a "piracy free" search engine technology according to Torrent Freak. The patent was originally filed in April of 2012and describes a mechanism based on "authenticity metrics" relative to a search term that is used to rank results. The presumption is that emphasizing "authenticity" of in presenting search results would diminish opportunities for content unfavorable to the "authoritative" arbiters of "authenticity" to be presented to users of the search engine. Bitreserve Holds your Bitcoins as Fiat
In an attempt to address the price volatility of Bitcoin, Bitreserve recently launched as a Bitcoin storage service that keeps users' funds in the form of fiat. Bitreserve does this by immediately market selling any incoming deposits, essentially locking in the fiat value of the credited funds.
